A piece I did as a gift for Josh Schrei of The Emerald Podcast. I draw inspiration from my eastern roots when I express myself. I particularly resonate with Zen Buddhist art, shodō (Japanese calligraphy), ukiyo-e (traditional woodblock prints and paintings), and irezumi (Japanese tattoo art) so I honour some elements, style, and essence through my own expression. The east is often perceived as a reflection of the west in many respects, so the emerald is depicted within the eye rather the eye in the emerald — as a mirror presents the same subject from an alternate point of vantage. Traditionally, the depth of character found in the ‘ensō’ is a result of the artist, their tools, and the irreplicable approach within the moment. To illustrate the immeasurable depths Josh invites his audience through his work, I added of course an emerald base combined with forest green highlights as an ode to mother nature and finished with a metallicized silver to portray the journey’s iridescence that is experienced.
