“Heartbeat”

This is the first piece of a collection of works I’ve called “Peace.” After returning from a month-long Buddhist pilgrimage in Japan, I returned home contemplating the idea of ‘peace’ and unearthing new understandings from an individual’s point of view. It dominated my mental space for several months, which highlighted its significance to me.

Concepts for art pieces usually materialise as an image in my mind before I put them onto canvas. During this period of rumination, seven different concepts came to me, almost all at once. This was the first.

The message in this piece is simple. My belief is that peace is innate. I have the sense that it is the pulse of humanity, that it is not only something that everyone strives for in some way. It is what keeps us alive and what makes us human.
